An IP68 label alone is insufficient to approve LED strip for a coastal installation. The project also needs evidence that the exact completed assembly suits its salt exposure, sunlight, temperature and maintenance conditions. A protected strip may be one part of that assembly; its label does not establish corrosion resistance for connectors, channels or mounting hardware.
Specify each location separately on a Gulf waterfront hotel or villa project. A covered terrace recess has different requirements from an exposed promenade detail or a position reached by seawater. A single tape selection for the whole site leaves those conditions undefined.
Ingress protection and salt resistance answer different questions
The IEC public scope for IEC 60529 covers classification of enclosure protection. It does not provide a coastal service-life claim for an individual tape. Review the stated conditions and boundaries of the proposed product’s protection, including its ends and connections.
IEC separately describes cyclic salt-mist testing in IEC 60068-2-52. Its public scope concerns components or equipment intended to withstand a salt-laden atmosphere and recognizes that salt can affect metallic and non-metallic materials. This is a separate environmental question from an IP code. A standard’s existence does not show that a listed strip has undergone that evaluation.
Ask which components and construction a vendor’s salt-exposure evidence covers, along with the exposure method and acceptance criteria. The project’s responsible specialist should judge whether that evidence applies to the installation. Converting a test duration into years of coastal service requires a supported relationship to the actual conditions.
LEDStripStar’s COB-8MM-320LED (RA80) silicone-IP68 family lists IP68 and silicone construction. Its catalog entry does not establish salt-mist performance or approval for a marine installation. Keep that requirement unresolved until the exact proposed system has adequate application evidence.
Describe what reaches the mounting position
Send a section drawing and photographs of the proposed position. Show the shelter, drainage paths and maintenance access. Distance from the shoreline alone says little about what reaches the light.
| Installation condition | Requirement to resolve | Procurement consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Sheltered detail with airborne salt | Corrosion suitability of the complete assembly and cleaning procedure | Shelter does not remove the salt-exposure question |
| Direct rain or sea spray | Water exposure, sealed joints and corrosion suitability together | Review more than the uncut tape rating |
| Persistent standing water or immersion | Explicit suitability for the actual water and immersion conditions | Stop if the product’s intended use excludes this location |
| Direct sunlight in a hot recess | Material aging and allowable operating conditions | IP68 does not establish UV or thermal limits |
| Frequent washdown or chemical cleaning | Approved cleaning substances and method | Include the maintenance team in selection |
| Metal channel and dissimilar fixings | Material compatibility, finish and corrosion protection | Have the assembly designer specify the hardware |
Treat sea spray and deliberate seawater immersion as separate cases. A catalog reference to outdoor or wet-area use does not approve seawater contact. Pools also have their own water chemistry and safety requirements; a coastal-strip selection is not a pool-lighting specification.
Record sunlight hours and the project’s relevant temperature conditions where those are known. If they have not been assessed, state the gap in the RFQ instead of inserting an assumed maximum temperature. For material appearance concerns, the waterproof-strip yellowing guide explains how to distinguish changed protective material from normal phosphor appearance.
Review every joint and exposed material
Ask the assembly designer to define the channel material and finish, compatible fixings, end closures, cable entries and connectors. A protected tape inside an open channel leaves other components exposed. Mixing metal parts without reviewing compatibility also leaves a corrosion question unanswered.
Have the supplier specify the cutting and resealing method for the exact strip. Confirm whether protection applies to supplied lengths only or to a defined finished assembly. An IP68 connector does not automatically make a field-made joint IP68; its cable, fit and installation conditions need to match its instructions.
Locate the driver and controller according to their own environmental and access requirements. The maintenance plan should explain how the team will inspect connections, remove deposits using an approved method and replace a section while preserving the assembly’s protection. Qualified personnel must plan and carry out electrical installation under applicable local requirements.
The 2835-8MM-120LED (RA80) silicone-IP68 family provides another catalog construction for review. Coastal suitability requires assessment of the full installation detail; a COB or SMD package format alone cannot establish it.
Before the project releases an order, record:
- The mounting zone and whether it receives airborne salt, spray, standing water or immersion.
- Exact strip, connector, cable-entry, channel and fixing references.
- Stated permitted conditions and evidence relevant to each unresolved exposure.
- The approved cutting, sealing and mounting procedure.
- Sample-review criteria, inspection access and replacement responsibility.
- The cleaning method and maintenance schedule agreed with the operator.
If a vendor cannot establish suitability for the exposure, have the project team select a purpose-designed coastal system or relocate the light. A short sample demonstration cannot establish long-term corrosion resistance.
Use the quotation form to send the location and assembly requirements, clearly identifying any unresolved salt-exposure scope. Standard MOQ is 500 meters and custom MOQ is 2,000 meters. Ordinary warranty is 2 years; it does not establish coastal suitability or override the product’s permitted conditions.
